Cold Feet

Do you have cold feet and/or cold hands?  In today’s post, we’ll look into your cold feet and see how we can warm your feet up with therapeutic reflexology.

Many times patients would tell me that they naturally have cold feet, so it is not uncommon in the therapeutic reflexology practice, but are you experiencing cold feet just during the cold weather months, or throughout the year?

If your feet are cold during the winter months when the weather is cold or even freezing, it is not uncommon for you to have cold feet.  Physiologically, it makes sense, because the cold weather causes your blood vessels to constrict to prevent your body from losing heat and when that happens, the extremities like your hands and feet usually have less blood flow, causing it to feel cold.  That is a normal bodily response.

Poor circulation can also result in you having cold feet and health conditions like high cholesterol may also restrict blood flow to the feet and thus cause poor circulation.  Anaemia, Diabetes, nerve disorders and Hypothyroidism may all lead to cold feet.  Reduced metabolism may lead to poor circulation that may also lead to cold feet.  If you are concerned about any possible health condition for your cold feet, it is advisable to consult with a doctor that can properly diagnose the condition.

Stress and anxiety may also cause cold feet because it places the body in a heightened state resulting in adrenaline being released into the bloodstream that may result in reduced blood flow to the extremities like the feet.  If you are concerned about what might be chasing you emotionally or mentally, it may be advisable to consult with a registered counsellor or psychologist to assist you in dealing with the relating emotions.

Therapeutic Reflexology is a therapeutic profession and therefore it is out of the scope of practice for therapeutic reflexologists to make any form of diagnosis.  If you need a diagnosis for your cold feet, it is important for you to visit a diagnostic practitioner like a medical doctor or homeopath to make a diagnosis.  Once your condition has been diagnosed, you are welcome to make use of therapeutic reflexology in your treatment regime of the condition.

Whatever the cause of your cold feet, you need to realise that therapeutic reflexology is an ideal healthcare modality to warm up your feet. Therapeutic reflexology makes use of various techniques including working on the reflexes (nerve endings), pressure point techniques as well as massage techniques on the feet.  All these forms of therapy on your feet are very helpful in turning your cold feet to warmer temperatures.

Therapeutic Reflexology improves circulation and therefore it may assist in helping your feet to heat up, but also to improve the circulation in and to your feet.  The result may be increased temperature in your feet.

Your therapeutic reflexologist may have just the correct heated paraphernalia to assist your feet in warming up during a therapeutic reflexology session.  During these cold winter months in South Africa, do not punish your feet by keeping them cold, but instead, spoil them to visit your therapeutic reflexologist to warm your feet up and remember to keep your feet warm during the cold weather.
