Jesus Christ also touched feet. Read more in today’s post.
As a Therapeutic Reflexologist, I’m regularly asked why I chose to work with people’s feet. I sometimes joke in response by saying that when I get a question like that, I’m glad that I’m not a gynaecologist. Or I would tell them the story of how working with people’s feet found me and not the other way around.
People often find it surprising that somebody would choose to work with other people’s feet as if your feet are not just a body part like your hands or ears or face or eyes. I’m always fascinated with this question because it often seems like the question is more about the fact that I’m working with feet than the fact that I’m working in healthcare with a specific body part. I hear podiatrists are asked the same question. The funny thing is, that medical specialists are not asked the same question; I never heard of orthopaedic surgeons being asked why they work with feet or limbs, or urologists why they are working with male organs, or gynaecologists on why they are working with female organs, or even ear, nose, and throat specialists on why they work with ears, noses, and throats.
Some may find it strange that I touch lives by touching feet, but did you know that Jesus Christ also touched feet? The encounter can be found in the Bible in Matthew 26:14-39, Luke 22:24-27, and John 13:1-17.
The Scriptures tell the story of Jesus washing the feet of the disciples. He did not touch their feet just for the sake of touching people’s feet, just like the Therapeutic Reflexologist does not touch feet just for the sake of touching people’s feet. Jesus touched their feet when He washed their feet. The Therapeutic Reflexologist touches your feet to stimulate the reflexes or nerve endings on your feet.
Looking at the story of Jesus; in those days, people walked, and they usually wore sandals when they arrived at a house, there was usually a servant that would wash their feet to remove all the dust and dirt because of walking in sandals. In the encounter mentioned in the Scriptures, Jesus took on the role of the servant and personally washed the feet of the disciples, showing to us all that we should humbly serve other people instead of trying to arrogantly boss people around.
Every time I have the privilege of offering Therapeutic Reflexology to a patient, I’m reminded of this Scripture as I realise the privilege it is to be entrusted with the feet, and life, of the person I get to provide a fascinating healthcare therapy to. It is so humbling to realise that I get the opportunity to work with people’s feet practically, just as Jesus Himself showed us how to humbly serve other people. Being a Therapeutic Reflexologist is an honour as I get to serve the patient by providing them with a non-invasive healthcare therapy that relaxes them and enhances their overall wellbeing.
Let me end this short post by thanking every patient that consulted with me since 2003 when I started doing Reflexology; having been entrusted with your feet, and bodies, over the years, has been a great privilege that did not go by unnoticed. I’m looking forward to continuing offering many people Therapeutic Reflexology in the future as I’m entrusted to touch your feet.
