Can Reflexology cure…?

Can Therapeutic Reflexology cure specific conditions?  Can Therapeutic Reflexology cure Diabetes or High Blood Pressure or Infertility or a virus?  These are the type of questions that are often asked when speaking about Therapeutic Reflexology and in today’s post, we’ll consider this question.

Let us begin by mentioning that Therapeutic Reflexology is a registered and recognised healthcare modality formally regulated by the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) and not a magic cure as is often alleged.  Therapeutic Reflexology does not offer any magic cures to conditions, but it has the potential to benefit you as a person, but let’s talk about it more, because it is not correct to say that Therapeutic Reflexology can cure any condition.

It should be stated pertinently:  Therapeutic Reflexology does not cure medical conditions!

Therapeutic Reflexology is a healthcare modality, just like Physiotherapy or Podiatry or Psychology and just like these other professions, it can provide you with healthcare services that may benefit you, but it does not promise a cure.  No healthcare profession can promise you a cure for a condition, because every person reacts differently to treatment and therefore promises of curing a condition is a misconception and not realistic.

So, if Therapeutic Reflexology does not cure medical conditions, what does it actually do?

Therapeutic Reflexology offers you a therapy of relaxation.  As your body relaxes, your mind often relaxes and when you are in a state of relaxation, your stress levels improve, your circulation may improve and chemicals like endorphins may be secreted to make you feel good and to even help with elimination of toxins.  As your body relaxes and moves into a state of relaxation, it is the optimum environment for your body to attempt to heal itself, or at least attempt to balance itself.  That is what Therapeutic Reflexology offers.

It is not the Therapeutic Reflexologist pressing on a certain point on your body that may lead to you being cured of a condition, that is illogical; Therapeutic Reflexology relaxes your body and provides your body with the opportunity to attempt to balance itself.  Due to modern-day lifestyle factors, our bodies are often out of balance and Therapeutic Reflexology has the potential to assist your body to balance itself.

Your body has been designed to heal itself or at least balance itself.  Just consider when you cut yourself; your body prevents imbalance by letting the blood clot or else you may lose too much blood.  If you hold your breath, you reach a point when your body’s innate ability takes over to make you breathe in order to restore balance in your oxygen levels.  That is how your body was designed to function; to maintain homeostasis or balance.

When your lifestyle causes imbalance, the body needs to restore balance, but it is not always possible and that is where Therapeutic Reflexology may be really beneficial to you; by helping you relax and for your body to experience the optimum level of relaxation to try and give your body a boost so it can attempt to heal or at least balance itself.

When you have been diagnosed with a specific medical condition, it means that your body is out of balance and often unable to restore balance.  In such instances, you need medical intervention.  When you are ill and undergoing medical treatment, Therapeutic Reflexology may assist your body to relax and it may assist in the healing process as a therapeutic healthcare modality often does by assisting with improved circulation and relaxation, but ultimately it is not the Therapeutic Reflexology curing you.  Therapeutic Reflexology is only the facilitative therapy helping your body to be in the optimum relaxation environment while healing occurs through your body’s own innate healing ability or through medical treatment.

People often think that Therapeutic Reflexology cures conditions, but that is a misconception based on the fact that some people experience a relief of symptoms after regular Therapeutic Reflexology treatments.  That is very true; Therapeutic Reflexology may relief symptoms, because when your body relaxes, your innate healing ability may attempt to balance your body and often a relief in symptoms is experienced.

I can personally attest to that.  I have a specific medical condition and I personally receive regular Therapeutic Reflexology sessions, but the condition has not been cured.  What I do experience, is a relief in many of the accompanying symptoms when I do receive regular Therapeutic Reflexology sessions, but that does not cure the condition; it improves my quality of life.

That is exactly what Therapeutic Reflexology does; it improves the quality of your life.  It may help to alleviate certain symptoms and especially when you have a severe medical condition or are undergoing severe medical treatments like chemotherapy, then Therapeutic Reflexology has the potential to help improve the quality of your life.

I hope this post clarifies the matter.  Therapeutic Reflexology does not cure medical conditions; for that, you need medical diagnosis, intervention, and treatment.  Therapeutic Reflexology assists your body to relax and be in an optimum state to improve the quality of your life, but keep in mind that everybody reacts differently to a treatment.

The best you can do is to receive Therapeutic Reflexology and experience it for yourself to see if it may improve your quality of life, but you will only know once you have received such therapy and see how your body reacts to it.
