Myth #7: Therapeutic Reflexologists do not need medical care

Foot picture

There is a myth that therapeutic reflexologists do not need medical care themselves and that they do not experience illness.  This is a myth that will be considered in this post.

Have you ever visited a doctor and in the waiting room, there is your Therapeutic Reflexologist, Homeopath, Naturopath or Unani-Tibb Practitioner sitting to be seen by the doctor?  If not, maybe you are just going to different doctors.

It may be an awkward situation when you enter the rooms of a practitioner or therapist and there is one of your healthcare providers sitting in the waiting room, waiting to be seen by the very person you are going to consult with; to simplify this discussion, let’s just assume it is your Therapeutic Reflexologist sitting in the waiting room of your doctor (regardless of whether it is a medical doctor or a Homeopath and so forth).  Patients usually wonder why their therapeutic reflexologist is in the waiting room of another healthcare provider because there is the belief that the practitioner or therapist a patient visits, should not go to other practitioners and therapists.  There is even a belief that therapeutic reflexologists do not need medical aids and medical care, because “reflexology is their medical aid and medical care”.

This is a myth and far removed from the truth.

Therapeutic reflexologists, just like your doctor or other practitioners and therapists, are just human beings and do need healthcare services from time to time.  Do not feel awkward when you are in the same waiting room waiting to be seen by a healthcare provider.

Yes, therapeutic reflexology is an amazing healthcare modality that is excellent as a preventative healthcare service, but it is not a miracle cure.

It is not strange for a Therapeutic Reflexologist to visit another Therapeutic Reflexologist, because if you believe in your own healthcare modality, you will ultimately make use of it yourself.  As a Therapeutic Reflexologist, I fully believe in what I do and do regularly treat myself with the Vacuflex Concepts electronic reflexology device, but apart from that, I also visit a colleague regularly in order to receive Therapeutic Reflexology treatment myself.

Why you may ask?  Well, because I know the benefits Therapeutic Reflexology offers and I do not only inform my patients accordingly but actually receive it myself in order to personally receive the benefits.  I am a Therapeutic Reflexologist, but I’m still a human being with certain conditions that need to be dealt with.  In the past, I was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and when medical science told me they could do nothing for me, Therapeutic Reflexology resolved the severe bloating I experienced and ever since then, I do get regular therapeutic reflexology treatments myself in order to keep the condition under control.

I come from a family line where heart attacks at an early age and high cholesterol are hereditary, combined with a condition called Porphyria, making it extremely difficult for me to drink any chemical medication due to experience the worst side-effects possible.  I tried to live a healthy lifestyle throughout my life due to this hereditary conditions, but when I was lying in an operating theatre as the cardiologist inserted a stent in my heart, he told me that healthy lifestyle can sustain you only for a certain time period before your hereditary make-up takes over and overrides lifestyle.  Modern medicine has thus helped me tremendously in preventing a heart attack by means of modern medicine when a stent was inserted in my heart to help me breathe properly again, however, thereafter the chemical medication prescribed to me, made me extremely ill and regular therapeutic reflexology sessions are part of my treatment regime in keeping me healthy and preventing a reoccurring event. So far, so good.

Therapeutic Reflexologists that believe in their healthcare profession, will necessarily make use of it themselves in order to experience the benefits. “Practice what you preach”, is a good motto to follow.

It is also not strange to see your Therapeutic Reflexologist in another healthcare practitioner’s office, whether a Homeopath, Naturopath, Unani-Tibb Practitioner, Medical Doctor or Medical Specialist.  We all need medical care from time to time.

If you have broken a bone, no amount of Therapeutic Reflexology sessions will ever fix that up; you need medical care to resolve the condition.  Therapeutic Reflexology is a therapeutic profession and we are not able to diagnose conditions; sometimes a diagnosis is needed in order to customise treatment protocol accordingly.

Whether a Therapeutic Reflexologist needs a medical aid or not, is a matter of choice, but if you do see your Therapeutic Reflexologist or other healthcare practitioners in the waiting room of another practitioner, keep in mind that it is not a sign of being incompetent; instead, it is a sign of knowing your limitations within the specific scope of practice you practice in and knowing when a referral to another practitioner or therapist is needed.

That is a good Therapeutic Reflexologist because a referral will be made to the appropriate healthcare practitioner in order to always keep the best interest of the patient in mind, even when the Therapeutic Reflexologist is the patient.
