Stress Management

Stress causes or worsens many health conditions; in today’s post, we’ll consider stress management from a Therapeutic Reflexology perspective.

The international stress awareness week is annually from 1-5 November, making people aware of stress and the impact of stress on their overall wellbeing just as year-end with its additional stress is fast approaching.  Stress has become part of modern-day living and can be positive and negative in nature.

Positive stress is when stressful situations force you to become creative and more productive in order to meet deadlines and come up with innovative solutions to problems.  There is nothing wrong with this kind of stress as it is motivational and short-term.  The problem is with negative stress that is ongoing, long-term, and leads to debilitation instead of productivity.  Some people may thrive on stress and the accompanying adrenaline rush and thus wait until the very last minute before working on something for which a deadline is fast approaching, but that is a negative approach to dealing with stress because it is totally in your control.  Negative stress occurs when a situation or problem is usually out of your control and it may lead to unnecessary tension in your life, but you are unable to get rid of the cause of the stress.  In these situations, you have to live in the midst of the stress and how you deal with it may determine the outcome of your overall wellbeing in the process.

Some stress is just out of your control and you may not be able to change the situation, but that is still adding to your stress levels and condition of health and wellbeing.  When you are stressed, your body excretes excessive amounts of hormones like adrenaline and cortisol that put your body in a heightened state as if you are facing a real danger.  The problem occurs when ongoing stress causes your body to be in this heightened state for extended periods of time as a result of ongoing stress, that may be totally out of your control, but you have to live with it.  The result of such ongoing stress may be health conditions like heart attacks, heart problems, digestive problems, and many other health-related conditions.

It is crucial for you to be able to effectively manage your stress levels.  Yes, it sounds easier said than done, especially if you are the one living in the midst of the ongoing stressful situation over which you may not have any control.  The good news is, that even though you may not be able to eliminate the stress or stressful situation from your life, you are able to control the way you react to the stress and that may positively impact your overall health and wellbeing.  Effectively dealing with stress is crucial in modern-day society because there is so much to be stressed about.

Therapeutic Reflexology is one of the best methods of stress management there is available to you.  Therapeutic Reflexology helps the body relax while assisting the body to eliminate toxins and excessive amounts of chemicals in the body.  Stress stimulates the sympathetic nervous system to put the body in fight-or-flight mode which is the heightened stress mode you are experiencing when stressed that leads to all kinds of signs and symptoms, and health conditions if left untreated.  Therapeutic Reflexology has the ability to counteract the heightened state in the body by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system and the rest-and-digest function while inhibiting the sympathetic nervous system’s fight-or-flight function.  Therapeutic Reflexology thus helps the body to relax from the inside out by getting the body’s own natural healing abilities activated to restore balance in the midst of the stressful situation you are facing.

With the help of Therapeutic Reflexology, you may be able to handle the stressful situations in your life much more effectively because even though you are in the middle of the situation, your body is more at peace leading to you maintaining overall health and wellbeing irrespective of the stressful circumstances.

As year-end is fast approaching, do not neglect yourself and allow yourself to become totally overstressed, and then you need to spend your entire December vacation attempting to just feel normal again.  A better approach is to include regular Therapeutic Reflexology sessions in your weekly routine in order to handle stress more effectively and when you enter your December vacation, you may have a great time of rest and recuperation instead of trying to overcome what you did to yourself during the final weeks of the year.
