Read about the intimacy of Therapeutic Reflexology from the perspective of a patient in today’s post.
Therapeutic Reflexology is known to be a professional healthcare profession formally regulated by the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA), a statutory council, just like the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) formally regulate medical professions.
Therapeutic Reflexology is known as a non-invasive therapy because it is based on the stimulation of the nerve endings (reflexes) on the feet, or sometimes other body parts like the hands, face, and ears. It is a relaxing therapy that helps to destress the body and mind while increasing circulation and restoring homeostasis (balance). The therapy is relaxing and a very pleasant experience.
The intimacy of Therapeutic Reflexology was brought to my attention recently when working with a female patient. She said that Therapeutic Reflexology is a very intimate therapy because you use your hands to greet strangers or to hold the hands of your friends, but you do not allow just anyone to touch your feet. What a true statement; touching the feet of patients has always been a huge privilege because it does portray a form of trust with the Therapeutic Reflexologist.
Even though many people do not pay much attention to their feet, it is a part of the body that when placed in the hands of the Therapeutic Reflexologist, reflects trust in the therapist but also a vulnerability in allowing another person to touch your feet, something that is not reserved for everyone.
It is this intimacy of Therapeutic Reflexology that places such a high responsibility on the Therapeutic Reflexologist to provide a good quality service to the patient while creating a safe environment that encourages healing and overall wellbeing. It has always been such an honour to touch the feet of a patient to offer Therapeutic Reflexology and by merely providing good quality therapy and creating a safe space, deep inner emotions are brought to light that gets released; all because a patient trusts the therapist enough to allow touching of her feet.
If you want to experience the intimate, but a non-invasive touch of Therapeutic Reflexology, make your appointment today!
