Therapeutic Reflexology may assist with your otolaryngological needs. Read more in today’s post.
Otolaryngologists or Otorhinolaryngologists are big words, referring to an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Surgeon. The ENT is a medical specialist focusing their attention and surgical skills on the ears, nose and throat. I value the expertise of ENT specialists as I have personal experience with sinus surgery that I had to undergo as a teenager and later on as an adult. Sometimes surgery is required, especially when a medical or therapeutic approach has not been as effective as you would have wanted.
In my instance, I was born dead during an emergency cesarean section (C-section) and in the process of getting me out, my nose was broken, but nobody was aware of it. I grew up having sinus problems and had one set of antibiotics prescribed on top of the next. Eventually, in grade 11 I ended up with an ENT specialist that made such an impression on me as he literally tilted my head, looked into my nose, and said that surgery will be needed. That after GP’s have been looking into my nose my entire life without noticing any problem. The ENT specialist told me that my septum was broken as a child and it grew skew, thus causing numerous sinus problems. Needless to say, I went for surgery and the septum was corrected and for the first time in my life as a 17-year-old boy, I was able to properly smell and taste.
The ENT specialist was my hero. Later in life, I had to undergo more sinus surgeries for polyp removal. What I found fascinating as an adult was that the ENT specialist spent time with me going through natural products as well as allopathic medication, I tried to fix the problem before he was willing to go the surgery route. That is a doctor I have high regard for because he did not merely choose surgery just for the sake of it, he used it as a last resort after all other options were depleted.
With that peek into my personal life, let’s consider Therapeutic Reflexology in this context. Therapeutic Reflexology is a healthcare profession formally regulated in South Africa by the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA), a statutory council making it illegal to practice the profession without AHPCSA registration.
Therapeutic Reflexology is a therapy working on the reflexes (nerve endings) on the feet and sometimes other parts of the body like the hands, face, and ears in a totally non-invasive way in an attempt to assist the body to restore homeostasis (balance). It is on that point that it becomes evident that Therapeutic Reflexology may provide value to patients experiencing ear, nose, and throat conditions. Ear conditions like vertigo, nasal conditions like sinusitis and allergies, and throat conditions like a sore throat or a constant postnasal drip may benefit from Therapeutic Reflexology due to it usually being associated with some form of imbalance in the body and Therapeutic Reflexology has the potential to help the body restore the imbalance.
It should be noted that ENT conditions may be complex and there may be various causes for such conditions and therefore it may benefit a patient to see a practitioner or specifically an ENT specialist to make a diagnosis. As Therapeutic Reflexologist, we are not allowed to diagnose, but we are able to provide therapy to diagnosed conditions. Sometimes there is just no explanation for some conditions, and it is called idiopathic conditions. I have been in the profession long enough to know that many experience relief of conditions, improvement of some conditions, and often improved quality of life by including Therapeutic Reflexology in their treatment regime, even if it is for an idiopathic condition.
Some people experience improvement of their ENT symptoms as a result of Therapeutic Reflexology while others experience relief from their allergies and associated symptoms. It should be said that some people, unfortunately, do not experience any improvement, but it is still worth a try due to Therapeutic Reflexology being a relatively inexpensive therapy. Some people may need surgical intervention.
It is important to note that every person reacts differently to Therapeutic Reflexology treatment and as in any other healthcare profession, there are no guarantees of success, especially since Therapeutic Reflexology does not treat specific conditions, but rather assists the body’s innate healing ability for the body to heal itself, or at least attempt to restore balance. That being said, many people experience an improvement in the quality of life, even if the specific symptoms are not necessarily disappearing.
Therapeutic Reflexology is a relaxing therapy that is worth trying for your ENT conditions.
